What is Astrology?

At its heart, Astrology is a divinatory relationship. Astrology is an opportunity from the flirtatious, proud, and luminous cosmos to the seeker who seeks to know whether the I in here is the same or different from the I out there. Astrology is one of few intellectual pathways to enlightenment.

Archetypal Definitions

Sun

The energy of the Sun permeates as life force energy through human beingness at successive and hierarchical levels. The Sun manifests as the survival impulse; as sexual energy or libido; as will, drive, and motivation; as creative impulse and protector; as speech; as adaptive intellect and metacognitive fixation; and as ecstatic worship.

The Sun also represents the hero’s journey through endless expansive and contractive periods which seek to balance individual identity and expression with collective identity and service to others.

Jupiter

Jupiter represents the accumulation and dispensation of life force energy. Jupiter is known as the great benefic, the giver, as he represents infinite expansion.

Jupiter manifests through human beingness as the ability to dream or imagine. The perfect state of affairs essential to inspiration is made possible through the integration of a personal dream with those visions of the collective where the individual may play some beneficial role.

Saturn

Saturn represents the structure or boundaries of life force energy which provide form and leave a shadow. Saturn is known as the great malefic, the tyrant, as he represents barriers which provide shape but demand separateness.

Saturn manifests through human beingness as mental schemas and physical boundaries which provide definition and identity constancy; which are clung to in a frantic and instinctual spirit of self-preservation.

Mercury

Mercury represents the ebb and flow of life force energy that is playful, excitable, and irrepressible.

Mercury manifests through human beingness as mentalized energy in a constant state of exploratory play and as a messenger and envoy between emotional spiritual and rational cognitive dimensions. As much as Mercury’s nature is lighthearted and detached there is freedom of movement, but often an allegiance is made with either feminine or masculine forces.

Our Moon

The Moon represents both attractive and repulsive emotional energy at a range of denser to lighter energetic frequencies whose totality is necessary to ensure the continuance of life.

The Moon manifests through human beingness through its new and full, waxing and waning phases which parallel the fluctuating yet recognizable nature of human emotions. At its densest expression, lunar energy manifests as shame, guilt, and fear as its expansion is constricted to the individual. As lunar energy expands beyond the individual there is some relief as it lightens to become desire, anger, pride, and enthusiasm. As the energy expands to the impersonal, its lightest expression manifests as acceptance, joy, and peace.

Venus

Venus represents lunar energy in its attractive and benevolent expression.

Venus manifests through human beingness as nurturance, bonding, and love. At its densest expression, Venus may represent vanity; at a middling expression, hopefulness; and at its lightest expression, collective belonging.

Mars

Mars represents lunar energy in its repulsive and malevolent expression.

Mars manifests through human beingness as the emotional motivation underpinning action such as desire, anger, jealousy, and pain. At its densest expression, Mars represents loathing; at a middling expression, desire or craving; and its lightest expression, a need for space.

Uranus

Uranus represents a sudden and shocking efflux of energy from a higher frequency stratum or dimensional plane.

Uranus manifests through human beingness as genius or sudden insight. Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury suggesting superior mentalization as a consequence of a mind that has eclipsed its personal reality and responsibility.

Neptune

Neptune represents an infinite expansion of energy culminate in an infinite lightness.

Neptune manifests through human beingness as spirituality, an intuitive connection to and knowing of collective unity. Neptune is the higher octave of Venus because it provides a connection to the macrocosm which supersedes the need for any attachment in particular. However, Neptune may also represent a need for escapism and resentment towards the experience of an individualized reality.

Pluto

Pluto represents the destruction and transformation of energy as well as the demand and devouring of it.

Pluto manifests through human beingness as transformation and power through integration of the desire nature. Pluto represents the higher octave of Mars because while Mars seeks to fulfill its desires through action, Pluto fulfills its desires through radical self-awareness and unrestrained disclosure.

Zodiacal Signs

The proper context for the signs of the zodiac is life as dramatic theatre. The signs are places or energetic epicenters where stories of a certain quality will be found. Signs are distinct from one another, but also implicative of one another in cyclic terms as well as providing each other distinction through polarization.

Aries

The Land of Aries is ruled by Mars the Lord of Desire. At its highest expression, Aries is a land of decisiveness, willpower, and responsibility. However, the dark side of what is often experienced here is wanton violence and intractable possessiveness.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all cardinal signs is on the first chapter or decan as the cardinal signs involve elemental initiation. Aries then, is an initiation into the fire element or an initiation into obtaining one’s desires through deliberate action. Mars is of course teacher and mistress.

In the First Decan of Aries, also ruled by Mars, there is hunger, thirst, and a search for satisfaction that cannot be found. The quality of this first deacon ruled by Mars in a Mars-ruled sign is insatiableness.

In the Second Decan, ruled by the Sun, something outside of the self has been located that will bring satiety. The Sun here emphasizes both the necessity of the outside object to personal well-being as well as fixedness or determination in its pursuance.

In the Third Decan, ruled by Venus, something outside the self has been obtained and must be kept. This Decan is ruled by Venus, in a Mars-ruled sign, emphasizing protectiveness, submission, and jealousy.

The focus on desire and action in Aries is the natural implication of its Piscean predecessor (See Below) whose sense of belonging confers responsibility; whose boundless enmeshment necessitates individual will.

Taurus

The land of Taurus is ruled by Venus the Alluring Lady. At its highest expression Taurus is the promised land, built on talent, creativity, and allurement; flowing with milk and honey, that offers eternal satiety. However, the dark side of what is often experienced here is naivety, willful ignorance, and feminine egoism.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all fixed signs is on the middle chapter or second decan as the fixed signs involve elemental constancy. Taurus then, involves the conservation and perpetuation of material security. Venus is of course teacher and mistress.

In the First Decan of Taurus, ruled by Mercury, there is a preoccupation with thinking about how to acquire physical security. The presence of Mercury here suggests that something needs to change and just what that is must be figured out, which may explain this decan’s association with poverty or insecurity.

In the Second Decan of Taurus, ruled by the Moon, there is a focus on protecting one’s security. The moon is often thought of as wholly benevolent, but nurturing is not without its darker side such as a woman whose child has been threatened.

In the Third Decan of Taurus, ruled by Saturn there is a focus on what went wrong in the past which brought an end to a period of security, and what boundaries or structures must be put into place both to go back to and preserve previously established security.

The prudence and poltroonery of Taurus is the natural implication of its following Aries whose willingness for conflict necessitates tranquility; whose efforts must now be honored.

Gemini

The Land of Gemini is ruled by Mercury the Peregrine Lord. At its highest expression, Gemini is a land of friendship and eternal gaiety guaranteed by freedom of thought and expression. There are no taboos, masculine or feminine, emotional or rational, except for taboos themselves. The dark side of what is often experienced here is anxiety, gaslighting, and non-comittance.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all mutable signs is on the last chapter or third decan as the mutable signs involve elemental completeness or totality. Gemini then, involves the completion and superfluity of the air element. Mercury is of course teacher and master.

The First Decan of Gemini is ruled by Jupiter. Although Jupiter is a benefic planet, he is in detriment in Gemini reflecting the problem of having an abundance of thoughts both as part of anxiety and the danger of successfully projecting oneself into the future. When Gemini is simply divided, he always has the freedom to go one way or another, but with many options, he experiences an overwhelm which may only be remedied by obtaining further knowledge.

The Second Decan of Gemini is ruled by Mars. Mars is significant here because it symbolizes the compulsion to move from one idea to the next, making the rules up as he goes, as a defense against obligation and stagnation, but also as a desire for and movement towards the acquisition of intellectual mastery.

The Third Decan of Gemini is ruled by the Sun. As seen here, Mercury has finally obtained true cosmic knowledge. The only problem is that now there is nowhere to escape. He cannot find comfort in unknowing or indecision, or satisfaction in moving towards a greater sense of superiority. In this state, he wishes for death as this is the most obvious way out and back to unknowing. As part of his death wish he shares his knowledge and spite with anyone and everyone.

The restlessness and impertinence of Gemini is the natural consequence of its procession from Taurus whose dullness has inspired a thirst for knowledge; whose stubbornness and naivety necessitate inquiry.

Cancer

The Land of Cancer is ruled by the Moon, the Blessed Lady. At its highest expression, Cancer is a civil, light-hearted, and bubbly land with an emphasis on family values, connection, and motherliness. The home must contain an undisturbed cheerfulness if children are to remain children. The dark side of what is often experienced here is emotional blackmail, emasculation, and melodrama.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all cardinal signs is on the first chapter or decan as the cardinal signs involve elemental initiation. Cancer then, is an initiation into the water element or an initiation into emotional connection and feminine values. The moon is of course teacher and mistress.

Within the First Decan of Cancer, ruled by Venus, is a story of making a connection with another by agreement and acknowledgment that there is something beautiful about the self and that also exists in the other. Venus is significant here in symbolizing intangible personal worth which may only be felt. A new connection may be very shallow at first, only a feeling of “liking”, and yet this first step carries a genuineness or innocence which is the necessary precondition for any further relationship or emotional fusion.

In the Second Decan of Cancer, ruled by Mercury, is a place of solitude where the mind and emotions are strengthened through mutual awareness and attention given to one another. When there is a healthy relationship with the self there is enough space and freedom to develop relationships outside of the self.

In the Third Decan of Cancer, ruled by the Moon, there is a time of choosing. The Moon is significant here, ruling both sign and decan, representing the personal prerogative to nurture or abandon, to give life or death, in the context of choosing which relationships to invest time and energy in.

The gentle and tenuous nature of Cancer is necessitated by its following Gemini whose loquaciousness has inspired forbearance; whose libel must be put to rest with care.

Leo

The Land of Leo is ruled by the Sun the Lord of Light. At its highest expression, the land of Leo is bold, regal, loyal, and steadfast. There is eternal generativity and responsibility for one’s own creation. The dark side of what is often experienced here is pride, narcissism, arrogance, and condescension.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all fixed signs is on the middle chapter or second decan as the fixed signs involve elemental constancy. Leo then, involves the conservation and perpetuation of the fire element or human spirit. The Sun is of course teacher and master.

The First Decan of Leo, ruled by Saturn, involves the development of character qualities that cannot be taken from which are developed through hard work, in competitive and conflictual circumstances which require rising to a challenge.

The Second Decan of Leo ruled by Jupiter, describes the glory and exuberance of a place of power and significance at the top of a hierarchy. The significance of Jupiter here indicates glory and magnificence but also implies that a changing order of preconditions for success may only be overcome through expansion and magnanimity.

In the Third Decan of Leo, ruled by Mars, the pinnacle of success was reached but now can only fall and may be lost forever. Mars here signifies that force or great effort will be required to maintain dominance, perhaps even more than was required to obtain success in the first place.

Fierce ambition and determination are the natural consequence of Leo following Cancer whose passive-aggressive petulance necessitated bold daring; whose insistence on gentle companionship led to a need to express individual brilliance.

Virgo

The land of Virgo is ruled by Mercury the Conscionable Lord. At its highest expression, Virgo is a land of order, work-ethic, and expertise gained through a commitment to material surety. Seen here the mind has triumphed over matter and all too often over the convoluted and anarchic parts of self as well.  The dark side of what is often experienced here is condescension, over-analysis, and over-control.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all mutable signs is on the last chapter or third decan as the mutable signs involve elemental completeness or totality. Virgo then, involves the completion and profusion of the earth element or the accumulation of material affluence and what to do with it. Mercury is of course teacher and master.

The First Decan of Virgo, is a story of hard work and perseverance. In a word single-mindedness. However, it is not just the grit and determination of the Sun which leads to material success, but also the knowledge and know-how given to the Sun by being in the domain of Mercury that brings tangible rewards.

In the Second Decan of Virgo, ruled by Venus in her fall, is the story of what money can and cannot procure. Venus is there to emphasize an attempt at material control over beauty. However, not realizing or embodying the emotional reality inherent in Venusian beauty has significant consequences. On realizing that beauty cannot provide what is needed for complete mastery of the material realm Mercury ponders what more it will take.

In the Third Decan of Virgo, ruled by Mercury, a choice is made. Either material things are surrendered for other types of wealth or worldly material success comes to such a peak that Mercury’s preoccupation with holding it leads to spiritual bankruptcy. However, even if material wealth is to be traded for spiritual realization, what and for what and to whom is still a Mercurial journey.

The diligence and scrutiny of Virgo is the natural consequence of its procession from Leo whose fame, fortune, and time in the spotlight was short-lived despite tremendous willpower and considerable gravitas.

Libra

The land of Libra is ruled by Venus the Alluring Lady. At its highest expression, Libra is a land that worships beauty and consecrates the experience of beauty through various artistic expressions to be perceived by all. Libra is concerned with justice, harmony, and social contracts. Libra seeks devotees to share in its enrapturement, but would not dare think itself worthy of personal possession. The dark side of what is often experienced here is indecision, non-commitance, and erraticism.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all cardinal signs is on the first chapter or decan as the cardinal signs involve elemental initiation. Libra then, is an initiation into the air element or an initiation into diplomacy and moral abstraction. Venus is of course teacher and mistress.

In the First Decan of Libra, ruled by the moon, ideas, or conceptions in seeming opposition, are regarded together in a state of detachment or non-choosing so that communication is possible by surrender to intellectualism. The importance of the moon in rulership here is the focus on a coming together of minds through the rejection of the solar or individualized perspective.

In the Second Decan, ruled by Saturn, a mutual agreement is made which may limit personal freedom for the sake of value achieved through mutuality. Saturn is key here as he rules boundaries, structure, and linear time.

In the Third Decan, ruled by Jupiter, the exploration of myriad possibilities and experiences is made possible through mentalization. Jupiter governs the principles of expansion and integration made possible here through an interdependence established between imagination and contemplation.

The focus on harmony, beauty, and artistry in Libra is the natural progression from Virgo where an emphasis on austerity and productivity strangled the soul to death.

Scorpio

The land of Scorpio is co-ruled by Pluto the Lord of Death and Mars the Lord of Desire. At its highest expression, Scorpio is a land of intense transparency, the merging of souls, intimacy, wisdom, and harmony achieved through the expression of shameless self-interest. A true understanding of the other may take place here as everything about the self and other is perceptible. However, the dark side of what is often experienced here is avarice, plotting, violence, larceny, and promiscuity.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all fixed signs is on the middle chapter or second decan as the fixed signs involve elemental constancy. Scorpio then, involves the submersion and surrender to the water element. Mars is the teacher, but Pluto is the master.

In the First Decan of Scorpio, ruled by Mars, there is a quest for emotional satiety. The significance of Mars here in its nighttime domicile represents the acceptance of darker consequences when in pursuit of an emotional realization as opposed to those which are tangible.

In the Second Decan of Scorpio, ruled by the Sun, the realization of all emotional longings are made possible through the merging of souls and spirits. The Sun here represents vitality which would not exist in and of itself but has been brought about as the provocation of emotional fusion.

In the Third Decan of Scorpio, ruled by Venus, a vitality that was made possible through union has been lost and many futile attempts will be made to regain it in separateness. Venus here, represents all things that are alluring and superficially gratifying used to endure and deny the culpability of aloneness.

Themes of longing, satisfaction, and devastation seen in Scorpio are all the fault of its Libran forebearer whose indecision necessitated decisiveness; whose detachment now demands intensity.

Sagittarius

The land of Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter the Benevolent Lord. At its highest expression, Sagittarius is a land of truth, expansion, adventure, and extravagance. Only in Sagittarius do the denizens feel and experience oneness with their creator. And when one experiences oneself as one with the divine principle all things are made possible by incredulity of restriction. However, the dark side of what is often experienced here is irresponsibility, mania, impulsivity, and pathological optimism.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all mutable signs is on the last chapter or third decan as the mutable signs involve elemental completeness or totality. Sagittarius then, involves the proliferation and inundation of the fire element or complete surrender and identification with the arousing and animating self. Jupiter is of course master and teacher.

In the First Decan of Sagittarius, ruled by Mercury, complete self-sufficiency from and preoccupation with a relationship to and expression of one’s inner nature brings about life as a place to be explored. Mercury is significant here as life lived in this way brings about a ceaseless journeying and adventuring on a quest for the next creative impetus to bring about transcendental completeness to enable meaning which may only be obtained as part of a whole.

In the Second Decan of Sagittarius, ruled by Moon, reflects the strength of flexibility and perseverance to carry forth a sense of inner mission. The Moon here represents the comfort and nurturance that must be given to anything and everything as they become part of the meaning-making process.

In the Third Decan of Sagittarius, ruled by Saturn, the great realization has been made, that spirituality does not exist outside of everyday life. Saturn is here to illustrate that even if such a realization is made the personal quest or mission is not easily abandoned because questor or missionary has become part of the personal identity.

Incessant meaning-making and quest for spiritual unity in Sagittarius is the natural consequence of its following Scorpio where the fragility and capriciousness of vitality achieved from emotional intimacy was experienced as loss and grief.

Capricorn

The land of Capricorn is ruled by Saturn the Lord of Karma. At its highest expression, Capricorn is a Land of wealth and monumentality created through shrewdness, a surrender to material realities, and binding social contracts. For some, the realities of linear time carry a dryness that must be escaped, and for others surety and vindication. The dark side of what is often experienced here is cynicism, cruelty, resentment, and the dullness of enforced utilitarianism.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all cardinal signs is on the first chapter or decan as the cardinal signs involve elemental initiation. Capricorn then, is an initiation into the earth element or an initiation into possession and deterministic science. Saturn is of course teacher and master.

In the First Decan of Capricorn, ruled by Jupiter, an understanding and acceptance is formed of unavoidable and unchanging realities experienced by the self and other. Jupiter here symbolizes those things which are needed and given for the continuance of life.

In the Second Decan, ruled by Mars, a mutual agreement is made between reasonable and realistic individuals to construct and enforce structures that ensure dominion over nature by acceptance of nature’s own rules. Mars is significant here because it represents purposeful action as well as acceptance of the brutality of natural law.

In the Third Decan, ruled by the Sun, purposeful sacrifices are continuously made to ensure dominance. The Sun is implicated here as the will needed to fight against distraction and the need for variability although its light may be dimmed by agreement to self-surviving confinements.

The coolness, arrogance, and sophistication of Capricorn are necessitated by its Sagittarian predecessor who ventured ceaselessly until burnt up, who found God but gained nothing of practical use.

Aquarius

The land of Aquarius is co-ruled by Saturn the Lord of Karma and Uranus the Lord of Intellect. At its highest expression, Aquarius is a land of humanitarianism, social justice, and innovation needed for the transcension of boundaries. Here there are no tribal boundaries between in-group and out-group as there is a belief in the value and power of patterns beyond the realm of the known. However, the dark side of what is often experienced here is absurd rebellion, identification with ideology, self-rejection, and cowardice.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all fixed signs is on the middle chapter or second decan as the fixed signs involve elemental constancy. Aquarius then, involves the approbation of the air element or individuation through idealism. Saturn and Uranus teach here together but are not happy about it.

In the First Decan of Aquarius, ruled by Venus, ideas of utopia are weighed in terms of the greater good and the consequences of paths getting there. The significance of Venus here represents specific values, moral or physical, whose worth is projected into an ideal future.

In the Second Decan of Aquarius, ruled by Mercury, the safety and tyranny of the known is abandoned for the freedom of individual accountability and justified by possible exploratory gains. Mercury here represents a reverence given to autonomy of action, nothing sacred, nothing profane.

In the Third Decan of Aquarius, ruled by the Moon, self-determination and glorified forms have failed to bring about paradise, but rather than admitting that meaning is only found within the context of interpersonal relationships, it is instead agreed that the fundamental human right is the right to escapism. The moon here represents the recognition held between outsiders.

Aquarius follows Capricorn where fixed boundaries confine and restrict curiosity and expression so that oppositionality and a compulsion for the remarkable and unpredictable are the natural consequence of having never experienced the feeling of home.

Pisces

The land of Pisces is Co-ruled by Jupiter the Benevolent Lord and Neptune the Concerted Lord. At its highest expression, Pisces is a land of serenity, empathy, oneness, intuition, opulence, and spirituality. Here a connection to the greater cosmos is made through unbecoming and the surrender of personal identity. The dark side of what is often experienced here is victimhood, inebriation, deception, and pathological regression.

Signs are energetic epicenters who offer stories and mastery. They are often split into three chapters or locals. The emphasis in all mutable signs is on the last chapter or third decan as the mutable signs involve elemental completeness or totality. Pisces then, involves immersion and dissolution through the water element so that the reach of emotional perception becomes limitless. Jupiter is the preferred teacher and master, while Neptune is to be feared.

In the First Decan of Pisces, ruled by Saturn, a complete inner retreat is undertaken so that the self may be fundamentally understood and appraised so that future projections may be made with sufficient conviction and precision to ensure a continual sense of oneness. Saturn here suggests that such efforts have characterological rewards which cannot be stripped away.

In the Second Decan of Pisces, ruled by Jupiter, the act of wishing, praying, or manifesting is made outside of a specific time-dependent context so that the experience of synchronistic wish fulfillment allows for the experience of something greater beyond the self. Jupiter here represents the fulfillment of wishes both conscious and nescient.

In the Third Decan of Pisces, ruled by Mars, the experience of a connection to external beneficence becomes integral enough to enable a complete surrender to emotional reality. Mars here suggests that such abandonment of the rational intellect will enable a sense of belonging but may increase the desire for surety.

Pisces is the natural consequence of Aquarius where individuation, intellect, and ideological commitment were not experienced as sufficient sources of comfort.
